What is the Ascent or Descent in psychological terms? For example in a certain period, I experienced very powerful dreams of ascent - usually in lifts or escalators. Some clarification of this theme is given by Jung:

Psychic energy ascends the ladder of the chakras, through the elements in both Hindu and Buddhist Yoga. JOURNEYS to a Centre, usually lead upwards towards a Divine City, Citadel or Castle, sometimes through a Maze of Labyrinth to reach the Centre. In Michael Maier this is a mountain called Parnasus.

If ascent is a symbol of the rising of psychic energy, which is indicated by sufficient experiential evidence, it therefore seems necessary that this ascent should take place in graded stages or steps. An organic process is evolved, stage by stage, step by step.

"What path are you on?" The question often arises amongst people who are travelling a spiritual path, and as the idiom `All roads lead to Rome' suggests, we may profit from exploring the use of the word `path' to indicate our involvement in `spirituality.'

According to certain Teachings, Man, has a threefold structure - divided into the physical plane, the mental plane and the spiritual plane. It would thus seem wise to consider physical paths before advancing to mental and spiritual paths.

Now there is one factor that is basic and extremely fundamental when considering physical pathways, and this is - the GROUND upon which all paths evolve. path is the shortest distance between two points, a short cut from one's point of departure, to the destination. This is not always the case. For example, a vast open field separates a factory and a bus stop. The path that traverses this field is dead straight, because the workers leaving the factory keep their sight on the bus stop and walk in a straight line. This worn path is almost as straight as if ruled by a ruler. In contrast, gentle country pathways meander. There is no hurry to catch a bus. The path flows with the organic contours of the landscape. Urban economy of time does not apply here.

ALL paths imply a herd instinct. A path is created by wear and vegetation is worn away by the constant passing of feet or hooves. Thus a path also includes the idea of DURATION or TIME - many being passing the same Way.

Historically, the nomadic movements of prehistoric cultures may have created paths. Shepherds moving their flocks created paths leading to grazing areas. Gardeners and those who sow seed stay in one place. This is dealt with in the occult book `The Book of El Daoud'. In due time, tribes and races began to migrate, creating links, or paths between various geographic areas.

For example: the dispersion of the Jewish people. Moses and the return to Israel from Egypt; Ezra and the return from Chaldea/Babylon. As great cultures grew, they extended their influence down the trade routes.. Or, if they were militant, as Rome was, armies marched to conquests or defeat. By the height of the Roman Empire, the known world was extremely well linked by paths (or roads) of various qualities. These lines of contact contracted with the Fall of Rome, and extended again with the Rise of Islam. Knowledge passed to and fro along the pathways created by each culture. This resulted in the birth of cartography, the art of drawing up maps. Our European culture was gestated in Alexandria, from the period of the Ptolomeys when all the civilizations of the Mediterranean were represented in that city.

Our relationship to the known physical universe was severely altered by discoveries such as those made by Copernicus, Gallileo and Columbus. We see the geocentric concepts now fading out. Navigation was the science which created the vast European colonies and Imperialism in general. The Atlantic was crossed by ships. India was reached by sea. The scene was set for the industrial and eventual technological `revolutions'. Our maps now charted new dimensions - the fine frequency manifestations of the discovery of electricity, radio waves, the telegraph, telephone, Television, cinema - lasers and fibre optics, nuclear power &c. All, as McLuhan says, extensions of the central nervous system.

On the Cosmic Level, we have the Hindu Trinity of Creator, Preserver and Destroyer, the Three Mothers, Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Saraswati is the Consort of Manjusri in the Tibetan Cannon. Discriminating Wisdom! The Trinity is operative in our own transpersonal interactions - we create, preserve and then destroy our Game Conditions, our various psychic personae. (The `kHorlo or Kyerim & Zogrim, Fading and Arising Yoga. Ground, Path and Goal).

HAWKWIND. The `pop' Hero Superman is a projection on a Racial D.N.A. genetic level. Both Major Tom and Superman are of another Dimension. PROJECT.

Luther and Calvin may have caused vast reforms on doctrinal issues, but they never helped the Mind to ascend to the heights that are scaled through listening to the religious work of Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart - or looking at a van Eyck or a Botticelli.

From Judy Garland, `Somewhere Over the Rainbow' to David Bowie's `There's a Starman Waiting in the Sky', and ZARDOZ.

The Way IN seems to involve and evolve, both as ascent and descent taking place simultaneously as an integrated polar process,which is vastly different from merely Going Down or Up, and it includes the integration of Opposites.

The NEKYIA involves a deep transformation and a meeting with the accumulated negative contents of the psyche - personified as `The Dweller on the Threshold' or, the Old Devil.

Having confronted this area, like the prairie jack rabbit jumping through the wall of flame, the horror is then gone, or vanishes.Only the aesthetics prevail, and this is the Path to Enlightenment.

Here, on a personal level, a dismantling action comes into play, localized in dreams of slaughter, murder, butchery, which is yet again, the release of psychic energy held beneath encrusted knots and covered by old circuitry and psycho-tapes. The `blood' flows and moistens the earth with its nourishment.

The Landscape is perfect and intact, until the Highways - train lines, airports and power lines are laid.The true Inner Planes are to be achieved - but only by burning the Boat once you have crossed the Water.

In essence, the Burning of the Boat, or the Transformation of the Vehicle, is a perpetual, ongoing process. Here, we re-think the symbol of the serpent in its operation of shedding its skin. Spiritual progression is a form of `The Incredible Shrinking Man' or Ego, in that, the skins which we shed, are our desires, or cravings to cling to the material condition - which become less and less as we move within.

The Buddha found a Way In - and NOT a Way Out:

The sperm enters the Mandala of the Ova. Seeds and planets are spheres, circles and cycles. Though not yet certain, it seems the key OUT of matter is through the HUB, of the wheel, or Mandala Form. Is there a choice between Outer Wall - Pluto - Terminus - and through the HUB - SUN - CENTRE.

The Path begins as a linear experience. This is the common comprehension. We are told we are walking along the line from Point A to Point B.

But as we move forward in deepening the perceptions, we discover that the Goal is within, at that great co-incidence of Outer and Inner reality, when the dividing lines between outer and inner cease to actually exist.Without boundaries, the Path thus becomes more open and spacious. It is to this wide and visionary state of consciousness that the Sacred Path of the Tarot leads.

An image would be a pole, that does not have a shadow when the Sun is directly overhead.

The entire operation, or Path, or Work, has, using another Tantric analogy - a Thread that moves through it, with it, is it. Or rather, many threads, bringing into focus the ideas of weaving and thus - TEXTURE.

In Cretan, and then Greek mythology, this is illustrated in the Story of Ariadne and her ball of thread, which she gives to Theseus to enter the Labyrinth. The Sacred Tarot is this Labyrinth, as well as Being the Thread that leads us to the Centre, and the Minotaur, which Theseus unfortunately slays.

Elsewhere - or possible here - I have shown how this Thread is depicted in the form of a SPIRAL - and how the Minotaur, in earlier representations, is a Centaur, i.e. Sagittarius. It is in the Centre of Sagittarius that we find the Centre of the Milky Way, or Spiral Nebula in which we, exist and have our relative Being. Thus the Tarot, is a Path/Thread that leads us back to this Cosmic Centre, or Non-Centre.

THE GATES; as in "...a door opened" - the clear way of Co-incidence when a passage; sequence of events indicates that a "gate opening" process is under way.

The entry into the Sacred Enclosure, once we have undergone the Rite of Passage through the Wall of Fire, is through an Initiatory Threshold, a Door or Gate, from one dimension or frequency of experience to another, and so on.

This transformation from 'our'conditioned materialistic reality, is often a shocking experience - and he Gates are well guarded by a Family of Beings known as The Dwellers on the Threshold.

These frontiers to 'Inner' or 'Outer' Realities, are not only approached through the higher vibrations of Fire - The Wall of Fire - but can also be reached through the initiatory transit of the Elements of Water, Air and Earth.

My own self-analysis is sometimes revealed through pages of seemingly random notes. For example:

"I want you to look very carefully at this DOOR (see: Gate, Entrance, the Gates to Other Cities in the Enochian Calls of Dr John Dee) - it represents entering the subconscious; Death and Transformation, (fear of the Dark and Unknown). Like in Star Wars 3, the entry into the Palace of Juba the Hut."

The 'DOOR' mentioned here, is a picture of an alchemical furnace, the one used as my LAPIS letterhead. Others will serve the purpose. See: Furnace, Doors in 'Chymicus Vannus'.

"This is the Door to the Oven, the Reverberatory Furnace of Transformation. In my one dream of the Old Crone in the Bavarian Castle in the forest - I now realize that she is the same as the witch in Hansel and Gretel, the textures of the Castle ( as King Ludwig of Bavaria had designed it) is on one level, the same as the glistening, sweet textures of the confectionery hut of the witch (Her Pasticceria) - but she is also the energy incarnate at the Door to the Oven - and Hansel and Gretel, who are my Animus and Anima, are facing their Aushwitz in the Athanor, the Alchemical Furnace, in which as YAB?YUM - YIN?YANG Polarity, they are to be cooked by the wicked Witch. This is also the Androgyne/Hermaphrodite cooking in the Fire. ANDROS-MAle.GYNOS-Female."

The Journey into the Forest, is bt association, a Path through the Forest, which leads, eventually, in one cases, to some form of door or entrance, be it a cottage, gate, or a cave mouth. In Hansel and Gretel - the Path leads eventually to the Door of the Oven.

The 'DOOR' immediately brings out the association with the Door of the Oven, in Hansel and Gretel. It is clear that the witch is a 'Devourer' as C.G.Jung points out :

"The so-called Oedipus complex with its famous incest tendency changes at this level into a "Jonah-and-the-Whale" complex, which has any number of variants, for instance the witch who eats children, the wolf, the ogre, the dragon, and so on. Fear of incest turns into fear of being devoured by the mother."

The views of Christian Europe in the form of the soldier Cortes - washed over the Aztec civilization of Montezuma - an abrupt confrontation. The relationship between these two men is a cosmic drama of vivid and raw experience. The next time this could happen is when the first contact takes place between Earth beings and another planet. Here we briefly review, that the physical maps led into mental maps of our material environment and universe, which in turn altered our spiritual maps. The most obvious example is the war between the heliocentric and geocentric minds - Catholicism and Copernicus and Galilleo. This applies only on the superficial, political level - as esoteric traditions in Europe had always maintained a heliocentric view. In his book on the Stellar mysteries of the Dogon tribe, Robert K.G.Temple writes:

Robert Temple here refers to the Platonic philosopher Proclus. We can understand the conceptual monsters that were born from this unscientific view of the universe, and certain debris of those wrong ideas still lurk about our theological structures. Thus, our mental maps were severely changes - and once in deeper harmony with Universal Structure, we were prepared to make the move to interior dimensions. The exploration of other planets and solar systems, could be in a sense a psychological preparation to exchange information with extra-terrestrial civilizations. These few ideas are what David Spangler indicates:

Our romantic attraction to the exploration of unknown spaces, is still evident in the mass media and especially the cinema. These few loose ideas are hung around the central subject under consideration - the 'Path.'

One reaches the position, where intuitions become a matter of fact, and are consciously and spontaneously integrated into life, minute by minute. This can be confirmed, in an individual by the position of the planets. It seems to me, to relate directly to Uranus. Having Pisces mid-heaven and this sign also ruling Cape Town, could be the reason (or intuition) for a return to Cape Town as an operational base.

Certainly, the cornerstone of all new developments are under the direct frequency/operational matrix of Uranus. This becomes increasingly apparent. In the words of an astrologer "...a new expansionary cycle." This is at the point of birthing. It is an exciting period, for areas that were seemingly separate are now coming into focus. And not that this focus has a centre, but actually has a non-centre. Which is why arrangements and personal relationships are being tested.

Real inspiration, clear and well cut out of the fabric of being.

This seems so necessary. The time is ripe as never before.

As Grace Jones sings: "You come to me like a moth to the flame" - we are the moths and the flame is the Truth.

The fact that we share the Four Noble Truths - the mortality and fundamental change of this phenomena level - should be the Motive for working together to ease the shit out of the bag. But no. We go on dividing and dividing until the left hand is knifing the right hand.

It sometimes seems as if the last virtue of humankind will inherit is mere common sense.

And where is the Truth? In Heaven above? Or in the theological slime fed to the masses in the name of spiritual nourishment?

The historic processes of the past two centuries have no parallel in the history of Homo Sapiens as a whole. Entrenched and crystalized patterns of belief are undergoing a vast transformation. The violence and psychological filth, currently floating on the surface, can be seen in psychological terms as the dross, ready to be skimmed off now that it has emerged onto the surface of race-consciousness.

The lower side of our nature can be transmuted into higher energy forms, but as yet we cannot say what the evolutionary trend will manifest as. Nevertheless we can project a possible keynote of this process and in order to do so, we have to adopt a holistic viewpoint. Encoded within the maze of our psychic contents are the forms and structures which will reach maturation and fruition once these themes and motives define the new centre/ Person, Planet. What applies to the individual, applies to Humanity as a whole. Thus the idea is to simply amplify a few symbols of a similar nature as they have manifested in different cultural contexts and to use this information as an index of future trends in the evolution of consciousness. Thus we take for granted that in terms of the present planetary situation, a new Centre IS being defined.
